Your First Thai Massage: What to Expect
By Aura Thai Massage, Ventura, CA ·
Thai massage is unlike the oil massage most people picture. You stay dressed, you lie on a mat instead of a table, and the therapist stretches you as much as they press. If you have never tried it, here is exactly what happens — and how to get the most from your first session.
What Thai massage is
Traditional Thai massage, called nuad Thai in Thailand, combines three things: rhythmic compression of the muscles, acupressure along pathways the tradition calls sen lines, and assisted stretching. It has been practiced for centuries, and in 2019 UNESCO added it to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The therapist uses palms, thumbs, forearms, and elbows to apply pressure, then moves your limbs through a series of stretches. You do not have to do anything except breathe and let go — which is why it is often described as having yoga done for you.
What to wear
Wear loose, comfortable clothing you can move in: a T-shirt and soft trousers or leggings are ideal. Avoid jeans, belts, and anything stiff, and take off jewelry before you start. At Aura Thai Massage we provide what you need, so you can come straight from work.
There is no oil in a traditional Thai session, so there is nothing to wash off afterward. If you would like oil work as well, our Thai Combo massage adds it to the same session.
What happens, step by step
- You arrive a little early. Five to ten minutes gives you time to settle and tell your therapist about tight areas, old injuries, and the pressure you like.
- You lie down on a padded mat. Working on a mat lets the therapist use body weight and leverage for the stretches.
- The work starts at the feet and legs. Most sessions move upward through the calves, thighs, and hips with slow, rhythmic pressure.
- Then the back, shoulders, arms, and neck. This is where most people carry their tension, so more time is spent here.
- Stretches are woven in throughout. Gentle twists, hip openers, and back stretches are each taken to the edge of your comfortable range and held briefly.
- The session closes slowly. You are given a moment to come back before you get up.
Does Thai massage hurt?
It should feel firm and satisfying, not painful. You may feel a strong stretch, or an intense spot when the therapist presses on a tight muscle — the kind of ache that eases as you breathe out. Sharp pain is never the goal. Say so and the pressure changes immediately.
A simple test: if you can breathe slowly through the pressure, it is right. If you are holding your breath or tensing up, ask for less.

After your session
Most people feel looser, lighter, and more upright, and often more energized than after an oil massage. Drink some water, go easy on hard exercise for the rest of the day, and notice how you move. Mild muscle soreness the next day is normal after a first session and passes quickly.
When to check with a doctor first
Thai massage involves firm pressure and stretching. Talk to your doctor before booking if you are pregnant, have had recent surgery or an injury, have osteoporosis or a history of blood clots, or are managing a heart condition. Always tell your therapist about any medical condition: the session can be adapted, or a gentler style such as Swedish massage may suit you better.

Common questions
What should I wear to a Thai massage?
Loose, comfortable clothing you can stretch in, such as a T-shirt and soft trousers. Traditional Thai massage is done fully clothed and without oil.
Does Thai massage hurt?
It should feel firm, not painful. Pressure and stretches stay within your comfortable range, and you can ask your therapist to ease off or go deeper at any time.
How long is a Thai massage?
Sessions usually run 30, 60, or 90 minutes. Sixty minutes is enough for the full body; 90 minutes allows a slower pace and extra time on tight areas.
Should I eat before a Thai massage?
A light meal an hour or two beforehand is fine. Avoid a heavy meal right before, since the session involves pressure on the abdomen and stretching.
How will I feel after a Thai massage?
Most people feel looser, taller, and more alert rather than sleepy. Mild soreness the next day is normal, especially after a first session.
